Outside Australia, the blue-tongues of New Guinea and the Indonesian islands are often called the Indonesian or giant blue-tongues. Keepers know several regional forms, such as the Kei Island and Merauke blue-tongues, now treated as the subspecies T. g. keyensis and T. g. evanescens. Their classification is still being studied.

They come from humid forest, so they need more humidity than the Australian species. Many animals in the trade have historically been wild-caught imports, so captive-bred animals with a known history are very much the responsible choice.

For keepers: Kept by experienced hobbyists. Needs higher humidity (roughly 60–80%) than Australian blue-tongues. Insist on captive-bred stock. Care guide →
