Glossy bronze with a dark side stripe, the little brown skink, or ground skink, slips through leaf litter on short legs, with a long, slender body like most skinks. It is preyed on by snakes such as racers, ringneck snakes and pygmy rattlesnakes.
Like many small skinks, it has a transparent “window” in the lower eyelid, so it can close its eyes against debris and still see.
