The “ocelli” in its name are the small dark-edged white spots scattered over its back, like a constellation. It is one of the most widespread skinks of the Old World and often turns up in gardens and on the edges of villages, sliding under stones when disturbed.
Like other Chalcides skinks, it gives birth to live young. The genus shows a beautiful range of body shapes, from this short-limbed species to almost limbless, snake-like relatives.
